Recently, I watched a great talk by a multi-million dollar earner who talked about the power of a dream board. He has a rags to riches story. He talked about how, as a time of extreme debt, he created a dream board about owning a vacation property in Hawaii and even brought sand to his office. He downloaded Hawaiian music and surrounded himself with pictures of Hawaii and his dream property.

Sure enough…this dream board propelled him to continue to build his business and he bought that dream property within several years.

My First Dream Board

I’ve never used a dream board before…in my experiences in sport, I mainly used visualization to create a mental image of what I wanted to achieve or of who I wanted to become. Visualization really works. After watching that presentation though, I decided to give a dream board a try.

Like most of you, I am very busy, and since I hadn’t specifically set aside time to complete my dream board, I didn’t get very far. I was just doing it in the few minutes that I could remember to… selecting photos in the few moments I could find for myself to flip through a magazine and piling the photos onto my messy desk for later (that’s a whole story in itself). So this is my first version of my dream board…

As you can see, this first version only has one photo on it: it’s of a new chair because I really wanted to get new dining room chairs (ours were wearing out due to extremely excited use by the kids at meals) and a new desk chair.

Although I had grand intentions of finishing this dream board with various improvements I want to do around the house (like new drapes, a new couch, new lights, exercising again…), my busy life took over and I didn’t manage to get back to it.

Frankly, I kind of forgot about it…

Dreams Do Come True…

Fast forward four months and I got a call from Robby (my husband) saying that a local furniture store was having a half off sale and he went down and put some chairs on hold. We went to the store after I was done work one day so I could provide my input. We ended up getting four new dining room chairs and one matching armchair for the desk. This is what they look like…

After setting them up at home, I remembered my dream board. I said to Robby excitedly: “You have to come back here to check this out!!” (He doesn’t venture in there very often because it is so messy so I had to slowly coax him in there.) I showed him the lonely photo on my dream board and he couldn’t believe it. It was exactly the same kind of chair with wooden legs (we could have chosen metal) as we had just purchased. He said: “You need to put way more on that dream board! And way more expensive things!!”

It took me a little while but I have since added more photos and I’m really excited to see what will happen next.

So What About the Nachos?

Well… as some of you know, I have a daughter who is severely allergic to dairy.  So since we learned of her allergy, we have virtually cut out all dairy…including yummy, gooey nachos.  But you know how those late night commercials with a big plate of nachos make your mouth water and compel you to get a snack? (Just thinking about those nachos is making my mouth water!)  That is the same way dream boards work. With a dream board, you create a vision of what you want to achieve and the life you want to create for yourself. A dream board can include photos, words, and inspirational sayings.

Once you create the vision, you’ll start on your way to changing your life and your reality to match that vision. (As many of you know, this is called “manifesting” and it worthy of a whole post in itself.)  Just remember when you plan to create your dream board to set aside a specific time to do it… and invite a few friends, it will change everyone’s life for the better!

P.S. By the way…the day I wrote this post, I couldn’t stop thinking about having nachos and realized I could make them with vegan Daiya cheese!  So I made a huge plate of nachos (gluten-free, dairy-free and topped with avocado and salsa of course).

See…I told you… this dream board stuff really does work…
